There was an item in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter about John Laurinaitis being back as the head of talent relations. He was recently brought back and given the title of General Manager of Talent.
Dave Meltzer says that Laurinaitis was described to him as someone who always has a smile for Vince McMahon. This is similar to what was said about Laurinaitis a decade ago when he was in charge of talent. It was also noted that while McMahon used to be someone who wanted to hear the good and the bad so he can improve the product, the present-day McMahon wants to hear that everything is great. Laurinaitis is seen as someone who, like Bruce Prichard, will not challenge McMahon.
Meltzer noted that McMahon has been surrounding himself with people who will feed the idea that the company is more popular than ever and TV ratings don’t mean what they used to.
So if you are a fan of the current product or if you are a critic, then expect more of the same. Since WWE is no longer running house shows and they have guaranteed TV (and now streaming) contracts, there is no incentive to make drastic changes to the creative end of things.
